Foods and Drinks that Stain the Teeth

Most people wish they could improve the color of their teeth, or get rid of surface stains that detract from the beauty of their smile. Fortunately, teeth whitening treatment can dramatically brighten and whiten the smile for our Corpus Christi, TX, patients. But once patients get the bright, white smile they desire, how do they keep it?

Oral hygiene habits help to preserve clean, white teeth. But it is also important for people to be cautious about what they eat. Dr. N. Perry Orchard advises patients about foods and drinks that stain the teeth so that they can limit their consumption and protect their smile.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee and tea are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to dental stains and discoloration. Many people like to enjoy a cup (or more) of coffee or tea on a daily basis. Unfortunately, coffee and tea contain tannins, which can stain the teeth. Coffee can be especially bad for the teeth because it is also acidic. Acids can wear away at tooth enamel, making the teeth more susceptible to stains.

For many people, cutting out coffee or tea is difficult. Instead, they can consider adding milk to their coffee or tea, which may reduce its staining qualities. It is also important to brush the teeth, or at least rinse the mouth with water, after enjoying a cup of coffee or tea.

Red Wine

Red wine is another common cause of dental stains. Like coffee, red wine is both deeply colored and highly acidic, which is the perfect combination for stains and discoloration. Wine drinkers should consider reducing consumption of red wine, or try switching to a white wine. Brushing the teeth after enjoying a glass of red wine can also reduce the risk of dental stains.

Cola

All sodas contain sugars and acids that increase the risk of tooth decay and acid erosion, so it’s a good idea to limit these beverages in general. Colas are especially bad because their dark color is likely to stain or discolor the teeth if a person consumes the beverage on a regular basis.

Fruit Juices

Several fruit juices are known to stain the teeth. Dark juices like grape juice, cranberry juice, and blueberry juice are especially likely to discolor the teeth. However, any acidic juice can wear down tooth enamel over time and make the teeth more vulnerable to dental stains.

Sauces

Many of the sauces that are used to enhance or flavor food have the potential to cause dental stains. People need to be especially aware of sauces that are deeply pigmented, high in acid, or both. Some sauces that should be limited include tomato sauce, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar.

Berries

Berries are high in antioxidants and vitamins, which make them a nutritious snack. Unfortunately, if our Corpus Christi patients regularly eat handfuls of berries, they are likely to notice it on their teeth. Blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries can all leave behind stains.
